Pushto film actor Badar Munir dies

October 11, 2008

I don’t know how many of you know him. I know him because he used to act (mostly) in Pushto movies. I am not a fan of Pushto movies at all. But he was an evergreen hero who used to act with Asif Khan, the father of Arbaaz Khan and Badar also had a hit pair with Musarat Shaheen. He can rightly be called the Sultan Rahi of Pushto cinema. This man could act for sure. I realized that when I watched his (serious and clean) black & white movie. Vulgarity had not dominated Pushto cinema then.

He also met with SRK once while the later was shooting for Duplicate in Mauratius. I will not use cliche words like his death is the loss of Pakistani cinema because by and large I am anti Pakistani movies. (Anyone could be the kind of work they have been doing). But yes, he would be remembered as a fine actor by those who appreciate clean and sensible entertainment.

LAHORE: Badar Munir, a renowned Pushto and Urdu film actor, has passed away in Lahore today (Saturday). He was 67.

He had been suffering from stroke for four years. Munir was brought to a private hospital with complaint of cardiac arrest in Lahore some two days back, where he passed away today.

Munir was born in Swat and belonged to Miankhel tribe. He made his debut in Pushto film, Yosuf Khan Sher Bano, which proved a big hit. His first film ‘Dulhan Aik Rat Ki’ as a here also set several new records.

Munir then acted in hundreds of Urdu and Pushto movies. He acted in 416 Pushto and Urdu films.

The Swat-born actor started his professional life as a rickshaw driver in Karachi. Later, he was employed by Chocolate hero Wahid Murad in his office from where he started his filmi career.

Our film industry is not well projected at all. So no matter how talented they are, our actors are seldom recognised as good artists in known circles.

I think the industry is dead already. Most of them have moved to producing CD teleplays (that are almost like movies).

And yes, when I say the industry is dead it is dead like look at an Urdu cinema and their movie titles:

    Haseena CNG
    Haseena Zero Meter
    Haseena Pre-Paid
    Haseena Unlimited

😕 I don’t think there is any industry at all…

Asma, I agree there is no lack of talent but there is dearth of training and professionalism. If the actors (especially female) come into movies thinking that it could be their short cut to setting up their business of flesh trade… then I am afraid things can never improve.

And producing one odd movie a year can never revive the cinema. Cinema owners and distributors these days are thriving on Indian movies.

Strange as it may sound but I compare Pakistan Cinema of 1966-1985 with the Elizabethan period of English literature. It has not been understood properly at all.

Death of Badar Munir is sad. It is like the end of an epoch. Somehow I had missed it in the news and learnt about it from this blog. Thanks.

Really there is no like Badar, he was unique in his art, unfortunately not only all Pakistani media but also Pashto media neglected him when he was alive and after his death. Now when i want to have his some interviews from the record of diffirent even Pashto channels, i failed completely to get any one, and a I think that is the actual loss for all Pashtoons.

Wow Badar Munir. We used to watch his movies when we were young. The fight and kill two people on one fire. His movies was awesome but full of fun. In old Pashto movies I really hate the heroine. They were too fat. But now they got nice talented heroes and heroine. Like. Jehangir Jani, Ajab khan and many more. My last movie was in 2006 when I went to cinema with my cousin in Peshawar.
Badar Munir was a good actor and he did too much for Pashto films. We will miss him. May Allah bless him…
