New things appeal to me but when it’s about currency it doesn’t excite me much. Because we all know how swiftly our currency has been devaluing day by day. So last month I was fairly surprised when the shopkeeper handed me a new one rupee coin. The design is the same but certain changes have been made.

Comparison with the old coin:

The old one was in bronze color. This one has a silver color.

The old one was heavy. The new one is lighter in weight.

The old one was thin in size. This one is almost double.

There was a time, not long ago, in early nineties when a tuck shop in our school would sell a samosa for one rupee. Now it’s about 4-5 rupees. Earlier when you used to give a rupee (note) or even coin (eight years ago) to the beggar he/she would raise hands to the sky and would drown you in the variety of prayers. Now, honestly, I feel shy giving a rupee coin to any beggar because I fear he/she would throw it on my face. You know what they say, “BBG, what’s the value of one rupee, at least give me five rupees. May Allah give you a lot.”

Times have been changed, so are the trends and what sucks is the devalued money. Now I realized what it means when elders used to say that in 60s or 70s they used to buy plenty of things for a few rupees.

God help us! Don’t know what lies ahead for this nation.

Blunder-istan should be the name of this country. Two months ago The State Bank of Pakistan issued new 5 and 50 rupees notes. I also posted the picture of one of the 5 rupees note (that I had got)… I didn’t notice one thing about it. It had only one serial number on the top right corner. (You can check July archives to see the photo). That was a major blunder and hence they have cancelled those notes.

I wonder why Shamshad Akhtar or any of her subordinates didn’t notice it when they were presenting the sample to Prime Minister. The image of same faulty note has been given on the official website of SBP. Here is the link:
