The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

boy-in-striped-pyjamasI have watched many holocaust movies. All of them have certain emotional appeal. But The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is, according to me, takes you to another level of poignancy since the story revolves around two kids of the same age but of different religions. This movie doesn’t show violence. It rather tells us about the friendship and contrasting lives of two children.

The movie plot is based on the (fictional) novel of the same title written by the Irish novelist John Boyne.

In Berlin, the eight years old Bruno’s life is mostly about going to school and playing with his friends comes to a halt when his father the SS officer (Schutzstafflel) is promoted and transferred to a country. Bruno isn’t excited about moving to their new house since he has no one of his age to play with and he’s not allowed to leave his garden. From his bedroom window he spots certain people in the stripped pajamas working behind the barbed wire. Having no idea that they were Jewish prisoner being kept in the concentration camp he misunderstands them for peasants.

He wasn’t allowed by his mother to go their but one day he sneaks out to take a closer look at the people working there. He befriends a Jewish boy of his age called Shmule. They meet at the barbed wire and keep meeting until a fateful day when the lives of SS officer Ralf, mother Elsa and his elder sister Gretel change forever.

    • :)

  2. what happened on fateful day?

    • I don’t want to spoil the story by giving away the end! :)

  3. There is no match to LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL on this subject.

    • I watched ‘Life is Beautiful’. It’s really nice one but it is a lot like ‘Jakob the Liar’ it is the story of a man in the ghetto who create false news about the approaching Russian army and their subsequent liberation in order to keep the spirits of people high.

  4. i rmr the time i was obsessed with holocaust movies …

    shindler’s list
    the pianist
    life is beautiful
    rise of evil

and then there were so many novels i read …

well… i have to get my hand on this one now … !!

    • Glad to know that there is someone else as obsessed as me about that theme :)

Schindler’s List is an awesome movie only if it was made in color :/

  5. I watched its trailer the other day and was thinking bout getting it already !

    • Give it a try. In my view it is worth watching.

  6. ooohhhh i think this is up here for the grabs :)

    • Sure! :)

  7. I dont know, I dont even believe in the holocaust!!!

I think am biased but jews…:S:S:S:S

    • Oh yeah there are many queries when it comes to Jews. But I do believe in Holocaust just as I believe in the Srebrenica or Rwanda Genocide. Be careful… denying Holocaust is a crime in Europe ;)

      Remember David Irving?

  8. hahahaha, well…

i remember a quote from hitlet I learnt from brother “voyageur” on my blog,it goes something like this:

” I could have annihilated all the jews, but I left some so you would know why I was annihilating them” :P

so it may be true, but then.. well i should reserve my comments :D

    • Hitler was such a lout! :) I believe he would have done the same if there were Muslims instead of Jews besides, history tells us he did the same with mentally challenged people, gypsies, gays and all the non-Aryan people. This man amazes me so much!
